SONG OF THE DAY: "Roar" – Katy Perry

Song: “Roar”

Performed by: Katy Perry

Album: Prism (2013)

OK, I’ve been obsessed with this song for the past several weeks, so it’s about time it were my Song of the Day! It’s as anthemy as anthems get, and it’s awesome.

Before giving you the official video, though, allow me to share these really respectable covers as performed by Postmodern Jukebox, and as performed by the cast of Glee. 🙂

And now that you’ve listened to/watched those, here’s the main event. Today’s Song of the Day is Katy Perry singing “Roar.” Normally, I try to only post official videos if they actually contain the song performed all the way through (without speaking parts or other narrative interruptions), opting for lyric videos the rest of the time so you can just press play and listen to the song – but this video’s really great, and fun, and there’s minimal song interruption. 🙂 Enjoy!

SONG OF THE DAY: "Be Not Afraid" – Written by Bob Dufford

Song: “Be Not Afraid”

Performed by: unknown

Album: n/a – church hymn (1975)

So, I was watching the show Rev. last night (which is a great show, by the way. And seriously, are there only five actors total in England, because it’s seems like all five are on every show!), which got me thinking about how involved I used to be in church. I’m Catholic (well, raised Catholic, anyway, and while I still feel Catholic sometimes, I’m not sure the church would consider me that anymore), and from the time I was in 8th Grade until about a year or two after college, I was a Leader of Song and a Lector at St. Boniface Church in Elmont, NY. I loved the fact that I could use two of my natural talents, singing and acting, to serve God in this way. St. Boniface was like a second home to me, and I made great friends there.

Anyway, I have several favorite songs I used to sing, and this is one of them. 🙂

Today’s Song of the Day is “Be Not Afraid,” which was written by Bob Dufford. Sadly, the singer on this YouTube video isn’t credited, and I don’t know what recording this is. Anyway, enjoy.

And pay no attention to the cheesy clip art in the video. 😉

SONG OF THE DAY: "Hard Out Here" – Lily Allen

Song: “Hard Out Here”

Performed by: Lily Allen

Album: From her upcoming 3rd Album of which I don’t know the title (2013)

I love me some Lily Allen, and I’ve missed her, and I’m so glad she’s back. 🙂

There’s already been a lot written about this video, and it only came out yesterday. There are those who adore it, and there are those who hate it. There are those who love the song but hate the video.

I’m still trying to figure out what camp I’m in. I definitely love the song on its own – it’s the video I’m trying to navigate right now.

While I figure that out (and possibly write something about it to be posted later), why don’t you have a looksee and tell me what you think in the comments below?

Today’s Song of the Day is Lily Allen’s “Hard Out Here.” Enjoy!

SONG OF THE DAY: "Instant Karma" – John Lennon

Song: “Instant Karma”

Performed by: John Lennon

Album: n/a – single (1970)

In the past few months I’ve been trying to work toward living a more balanced life, and I think I’m getting closer. My work schedule and the fact that I get to do more work from home allows me to structure my days in a way that’s better for me; where I get to actually sit and have lunch, or read a book, or alternate different projects in a way that makes sense to me, or *gasp* take a walk in the middle of the day. I’ve even gotten back to meditating with the new Oprah and Deepak Chopra 21-Day Meditation Challenge. 🙂

I’m still a work in progress, of course. I’m in the process of trying to organize my financial life, and that’s gonna take some major overhauling (though not as much as I originally thought). And I’m also trying to figure out how best to use my improved time management to not only get my own work done, but to also the work of bettering the world a little at a time. WriteGirl is a strong start, and I’d like to do more.

Eventually, I’ll have this all figured out. 🙂

Anyway, it should be no surprise then that today’s Song of the Day is John Lennon’s “Instant Karma.” Now, get out there and shine on, people! 🙂

Because I was in New York City when Lou Reed died, and because I tend to surround myself with crazy freaks. 🙂

Here’s his classic song “Walk on the Wild Side.” Enjoy!

And RIP, Lou.

SONG OF THE DAY: "Work, Bitch!" – Britney Spears (and an Update)

Song: “Work, Bitch!”

Performed by: Britney Spears

Album: n/a – upcoming (2013)

Because I don’t feel bad about being too tired/busy/whatever to blog if it means I’ve been reserving energy to do important things like:

  • revisions on 10 episodes of a webseries (Incredible Girl)
  • final two scenes on my first hour-long, original pilot w/my writing partner
  • planning a 3-week trip home to New York for my “little sister’s” wedding and to visit friends and family, when I’ll be bringing The Boy home for the first time

All of which I have been doing.

On top of that, yesterday was my last full office day at my main day job. From now on, I’ll be doing that job virtually from home, only going into the office once in a blue moon, which means I’ll have more time to write and devote to personal projects.

I’ve managed to keep myself employed (virtual office work, 2-day a week other day job at which I can also write, freelance proofreading, possible future background work?) while also designing a life that allows me to have ultimate flexibility and time to do the work I need to be doing. I’ve already been working hard, but now that the big job has officially gone virtual, I’m hitting the ground running.

Time to work, bitch.

Here’s Britney Spears with today’s Song of the Day. Enjoy!

NSFW SONG OF THE DAY: "Put It In Your Mouth" – Akinyele

Song: “Put It In Your Mouth”

Performed by: Akinyele

Album: Put It In Your Mouth EP (1996)

Last night, I went to an amazing class on oral sex at The Pleasure Chest L.A. called “Suck It, Lick It, Love It with Sex Nerd Sandra and Larkin.” Sandra and Larkin were wonderful teachers and they created a safe space where people could ask whatever they wanted, cleared up a lot of people’s misconceptions about how to give and receive pleasure, and provided all sorts of great info and tips. If you have a chance to listen to Sandra’s Nerdist podcast, give it a whirl – she’s a great teacher, and hilarious to boot!

And I’m gonna have oodles of fun practicing the new tips I learned! Ahem…

Anwyay, today’s Song of the Day is “Put It In Your Mouth” by Akinyele. It’s totally NSFW – but it’s totally safe for re-living 90s hip-hop. 🙂

SONG OF THE DAY: "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)" – Rupert Holmes

Song: “Escape (The Pina Colada Song)”

Performed by: Rupert Holmes

Album: Partners in Crime (1979)

This morning, I was finishing up a guest post for someone else’s blog (I’ll link to it here as soon as it’s up) about writing, and realized the extent to which writing has been an escape for me.

And then I couldn’t get this song out of my head. 🙂

Today’s Song of the Day is “Escape (The Pina Colada Song)” by Rupert Holmes, which was released several months after I was born. God, I’m old. 😉 Anyway, enjoy!

SONG OF THE DAY: "We Can't Stop" – Postmodern Jukebox

Song: “We Can’t Stop”

Performed by: Postmodern Jukebox

Album: n/a – The Internet. You can buy this, and their other singles, on iTunes and Amazon

I am currently obsessed – OBSESSED – with this song. Not the Miley Cyrus version, but THIS version, which to me sounds better (and more subversive) than the original.

You may know Postmodern Jukebox from such fabulous covers as “Call Me Maybe,” and this is their latest.

Today’s Song of the Day is “We Can’t Stop” as performed by Postmodern Jukebox. Robyn Adele Anderson, I applaud you! This lady can sing! 🙂

SONG OF THE DAY: "Army of Me [Sucker Punch Remix]" – Bjork feat. Skunk Anansie

Song: “Army of Me [Sucker Punch Remix]”

Performed by: Bjork feat. Skunk Anansie

Album: Sucker Punch Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (2011)

Yesterday, I went to bed plagued with self-doubt. Almost literally paralyzed by it. It was the same self-doubt that always seems to stop me just short of achieving something I really want to do.

Suddenly, I know why I’m a Mets fan. We both often get thisclose to the World Series, or to the playoffs, only to fall short. They’re me, as a baseball team.

This morning, however, I was saved from feeling that way by a video about “grit.” I suggest watching this, too. That, and Angela Lee Duckworth’s accompanying Grit Test slapped me in the face a bit. (Thanks, Bob Lefsetz) Ultimately, how successful you are has less to do with your talent or I.Q. than your determination. And I, admittedly, could use more of that and less of the crappy voices in my head that tell me I suck, wouldn’t you agree?

So, this morning, I’m feeling more determined – and I hope it lasts. I hope I can continue to push through the doubt and realize that my future is my own making, as long as I’m willing to work at it. I want to be the kind of person and that today’s Song of the Day demands that you be.

No. I will be. End of story.

Here is “Army of Me [Sucker Punch Remix]” by Bjork featuring Skunk Anansie. Enjoy! Then, go out and DO THINGS.
