Because Boys Deserve Love Songs, Two. A PLAYLIST.

Yesterday was The Boy and my first anniversary! Yay us! We celebrated by recreating our first date, and it was a wonderful evening.

Me and The Boy. I can't even take how cute we are. :)

Me and The Boy. I can’t even take how cute we are. 🙂

And it got me thinking about how amazing he is, which got me thinking about my Valentine’s Day post “Because Boys Deserve Love Songs, Too,” which continues to be one of my most popular posts to date! So I thought that, in honor of my amazing partner in crime, I would do a sequel to that post appropriately titled: Because Boys Deserve Love Songs, Two.

The first song, however, is just a duet that reminds me of my relationship with The Boy. 🙂

HONORABLE MENTION

The Moldy Peaches – ANYONE ELSE BUT YOU

“We both have shiny, happy fits of rage. You want more fans, I want more stage. I don’t see what anyone can see in anyone else but you.” Yup. Pretty much. 🙂

And now for the guy-focused love songs you’re here for! And remember that my criteria for this is to pick songs that praise men for being awesome partners without talking about what they’re not or what they don’t have. And, as always, if you have suggestions for songs that fit the bill, leave them in the comments below! Here we go…

YOU’RE HOT

Because our male love interests sometimes need to be reassured that they’re pretty. 🙂

Liz Phair – ROCK ME

Speaking as a woman dating a younger man…young guys DO rule! 🙂 Thank you, Liz Phair, for capturing this truth.

Paula Cole – FEELIN’ LOVE

Because that special guy should know just how much he’s turning you on. Um…this song is hot. 🙂

Toni Braxton – YOU’RE MAKING ME HIGH

Another 1990’s track about a special guy turning the narrator on. Hell yeah! Women have sex drives! And good men pay attention to those. 🙂

Fiona Apple – ANYTHING WE WANT

I love, love, love the way that this song captures that moment when you know you want someone to kiss/touch you. 🙂

YOU’RE SPECIAL

Men are more than sex objects, you guys! 🙂 They’re actually people. With feelings. In all seriousness, men that know how to give you their time, who share their vulnerability with you, who know you better than you know yourself, who keep you excited, and treat you well are priceless, and should be told when they’re getting it right!

Taylor Swift – MINE

I love the story that Swift tells in this song, talking about love going through good times and bad times and how problems don’t send this guy running.

Julie Delpy – A WALTZ FOR A NIGHT

I just love the bravery of this moment in the film, Before Sunrise. Singing a song like this to the the guy who inspired it ten years after the fact? 🙂 Awesomeness.

Salt N’ Pepa, featuring En Vogue – WHATTA MAN

The best song ever about a guy being The Whole Package. 🙂

Rachael Yamagata – 1963

Such a sweet, carefree, ebullient love song!

Miley Cyrus – SEE YOU AGAIN

Here’s a throwback to the days of Hannah Montana, and it’s the only Miley Cyrus song I ever liked from that era of her career. I love how it captures the nervousness about being around your crush. It’s unlike anything else.

Well, that’s it for this installment of Because Boys Deserve Love Songs! (I didn’t even realize this would be a thing until today.) If you have a special man in your life who does all the right things, tell him so! Hell, no matter how you identify or who you’re dating/married to/sleeping with, good relationship behavior should be rewarded and celebrated!

And to The Boy, I say: Happy First Day of Our Second Year Together. I love you.

SONG OF THE DAY: "Play" – Jennifer Lopez

Song: “Play”

Performed by: Jennifer Lopez

I hadn’t heard this song in forever, and suddenly, when it came on my Spotify “Random” playlist yesterday, I found myself dancing in my seat until eventually I was dancing alone in my living room! 🙂

Today’s Song of the Day is “Play” by Jennifer Lopez. Enjoy!

SONG OF THE DAY: "Slide" – Dido

Song: “Slide”

Performed by: Dido

Album: No Angel (1999)

It is the best of times, it is the worst of times. Dickens knew what was up. Last week, I did an amazing job of structuring my week now that I’m working mostly from home to get both day job stuff and writing stuff done, and I even made time during the day for “me time” – time to read, time to meditate. And then…I fell behind. Sunday and yesterday were all over the place, and the calming equilibrium I found seemed to have been frittered away and replaced with my usual panicked inertia. I was a deer in headlights again.

I have to remind myself that I’m not going to get it right every single day, but that 1) it’s OK, and 2) that’s no reason to give up entirely. Today is the one day a week where I have to leave my apartment for a day job, so I’m going to do that, after which, I’ll get back on the productivity horse tomorrow and get back to the structured day I’ve created for myself that I’ve realized that I really, really need in order to be at my best.

And because sometimes we all need a comforting talking-to, today’s Song of the Day is “Slide” by Dido from her debut album, No Angel. Enjoy! And don’t be so hard on yourselves today. 🙂

SONG OF THE DAY: "Roar" – Katy Perry

Song: “Roar”

Performed by: Katy Perry

Album: Prism (2013)

OK, I’ve been obsessed with this song for the past several weeks, so it’s about time it were my Song of the Day! It’s as anthemy as anthems get, and it’s awesome.

Before giving you the official video, though, allow me to share these really respectable covers as performed by Postmodern Jukebox, and as performed by the cast of Glee. 🙂

And now that you’ve listened to/watched those, here’s the main event. Today’s Song of the Day is Katy Perry singing “Roar.” Normally, I try to only post official videos if they actually contain the song performed all the way through (without speaking parts or other narrative interruptions), opting for lyric videos the rest of the time so you can just press play and listen to the song – but this video’s really great, and fun, and there’s minimal song interruption. 🙂 Enjoy!

SONG OF THE DAY: "Hard Out Here" – Lily Allen

Song: “Hard Out Here”

Performed by: Lily Allen

Album: From her upcoming 3rd Album of which I don’t know the title (2013)

I love me some Lily Allen, and I’ve missed her, and I’m so glad she’s back. 🙂

There’s already been a lot written about this video, and it only came out yesterday. There are those who adore it, and there are those who hate it. There are those who love the song but hate the video.

I’m still trying to figure out what camp I’m in. I definitely love the song on its own – it’s the video I’m trying to navigate right now.

While I figure that out (and possibly write something about it to be posted later), why don’t you have a looksee and tell me what you think in the comments below?

Today’s Song of the Day is Lily Allen’s “Hard Out Here.” Enjoy!

SONG OF THE DAY: "Work, Bitch!" – Britney Spears (and an Update)

Song: “Work, Bitch!”

Performed by: Britney Spears

Album: n/a – upcoming (2013)

Because I don’t feel bad about being too tired/busy/whatever to blog if it means I’ve been reserving energy to do important things like:

  • revisions on 10 episodes of a webseries (Incredible Girl)
  • final two scenes on my first hour-long, original pilot w/my writing partner
  • planning a 3-week trip home to New York for my “little sister’s” wedding and to visit friends and family, when I’ll be bringing The Boy home for the first time

All of which I have been doing.

On top of that, yesterday was my last full office day at my main day job. From now on, I’ll be doing that job virtually from home, only going into the office once in a blue moon, which means I’ll have more time to write and devote to personal projects.

I’ve managed to keep myself employed (virtual office work, 2-day a week other day job at which I can also write, freelance proofreading, possible future background work?) while also designing a life that allows me to have ultimate flexibility and time to do the work I need to be doing. I’ve already been working hard, but now that the big job has officially gone virtual, I’m hitting the ground running.

Time to work, bitch.

Here’s Britney Spears with today’s Song of the Day. Enjoy!

SONG OF THE DAY: "Blurred Lines" – Robin Thicke feat. Pharrell Williams

Song: “Blurred LInes”

Performed by: Robin Thicke feat. Pharrell Williams

Album: Blurred Lines (2013)

Yes. This song. Because I like it. And because I’m finally writing the post about it that I’ve been sitting on for weeks today.

Today’s Song of the Day is “Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke feat. Pharrell Williams.

And don’t worry, this is the safer version of the video. 🙂

SONG OF THE DAY: "Beautiful, Dirty, Rich" – Lady Gaga

Song: “Beautiful, Dirty, Rich”

Performed by: Lady Gaga

Album: The Fame (2008)

Amid all the Miley Cyrus brouhaha a couple of weeks ago, I came across a defense of “We Can’t Stop” as satire, which made me think Um, satire has to be obvious as satire in order for it to be effective. This is not that.

Which made me think of what was that, and I thought of the fabulous Lady Gaga song, “Beautiful, Dirty, Rich,” which not only effectively parodies the lives of spoiled rich kids, as well as recall an 80s, Warholian aesthetic, but does so to a dance beat you actually can party to, unlike Cyrus’ offering, which you can energetically sway to at best.

So, today’s Song of the Day is “Beautiful, Dirty, Rich.” Enjoy! And if anyone can get me an orange hooded leotard like the one Gaga wears in this video, I’d be super-grateful. 🙂

SONG OF THE DAY: "We Can't Stop" – Miley Cyrus

Song: “We Can’t Stop”

Performed by: Miley Cyrus

Album: Bangerz (2013)

I don’t particularly like this song. In fact, when I first heard this song, I thought, For a “party” song about how they’re “not gonna stop” this sure is slow and undanceable. I grabbed my iPod and cleansed my palate with some Ke$ha. 🙂

But I, like much of the internet, had Miley Cyrus’ MTV VMA performance shoved in my face enough times that I had to give in and watch it if only to understand what the hell was going on. Cue conversations about sexism and racism and bad pop. Then I watched the actual video to the song, and that was more interesting to me. It’s a well made video, I have to say.

Still don’t like the song all that much, but I do like the video.

And I think if the VMA performance were more like the video (where Miley grabs White girls, too, as well as men, and it’s not quite as racially lopsided), it wouldn’t have the strong racial reaction. And if a woman objectifies another woman, is that sexist? Is there a place for objectifying – period – when it comes to sexual desire? And can’t a 20-year-old woman do whatever the fuck she wants when performing her own damn song?

And the fact that this one song is churning up all this conversation shows how important pop music can actually be. Art starts and allows for conversations to happen. I’ve always thought that it was important to have serious conversations about pop music, and this Week of Miley shows why.

Anyway, all this is to explain why today’s Song of the Day is a song I’m not all that crazy about, but that I respect as an intriguing moment in pop culture. Here’s “We Can’t Stop” by Miley Cyrus. And if all you’ve seen is the VMA performance, check out the official video. It’s actually not bad.

SONG OF THE DAY: "Your Love Is My Drug" – Ke$ha

Song: “Your Love Is My Drug”

Performed by: Ke$ha

Album: Animal (2010)

I spent a good chunk of July holed up and incommunicado, which could sound hella depressing, or at the very least really boring, were it not for the fact that I was holed up and incommunicado with someone really special. This is actually the first time in my life that I’ve had the opportunity to be holed up with someone special, and I’m rather enjoying it. 🙂 It’s not at all what I expected. It’s better. Not to mention a lot easier than I thought it would be. Don’t get me wrong – there’s lots of work involved. All relationships are work. But the easy part is in knowing that there’s no one else I’d rather be doing all this work with, and that’s a great feeling. I love him.

And yes, I do like his beard. 🙂

So, in honor of this intoxicating chapter in my life, as well as a love of beards and all things bohemian and slightly crazy, today’s Song Of the Day is “Your Love Is My Drug” by Ke$ha.
