SONG OF THE DAY: "How Much Is That Doggie In the Window?" – Patti Page

Song: “How Much Is That Doggie In the Window?”

Performed by: Patti Page

Album: single – released by Mercury Records as 70070 (1952/53)

This is a weird one, I know. But it kept coming up this weekend. I was re-watching Spaced on Netflix, and this song features prominently in the episode “Leaves” from S2, when Colin runs away to that creepy old woman’s house. Then, I was watching S1 of American Horror Story (great show!), and the song came up there, too.

What amazed me is that, not only is this a novelty song that actually exists, but that it has endured to the point of still being used on television shows in the late 20th/early 21st Centuries. Why this song wasn’t lost to history, I have no idea, but props for sticking it out, Song!

Today’s Song of the Day is “How Much Is That Doggie In the Window?” performed by Patti Page. Enjoy! And if you have a dog (or dogs), give it a hug for me! 🙂

SONG OF THE DAY: "Jesus Christ" – Woody Guthrie

Song: “Jesus Christ”

Performed by: Woody Guthrie

Album: Woody Guthrie (1944) / first written in 1940

So, a friend of mine sent me this article about Pope Francis, his feelings about capitalism, and his venture to become the Coolest Pope Ever. (Which kinda isn’t difficult, but still)

Then, he said that the article reminded him of this song, which he also sent me, and I have to agree! Woody Guthrie knows what’s up.

Today’s Song of the Day is “Jesus Christ” by Woody Guthrie.  Enjoy!

SONG OF THE DAY: "The Ruler and the Killer" – Kid Cudi

Song: “The Ruler and the Killer”

Performed by: Kid Cudi

Album: The Hunger Games: Songs From District 12 and Beyond (2012)

The other big geek event this past weekend was the release of Catching Fire, the second film in the Hunger Games series. I’ll be writing about that later…but in the meantime, here’s my favorite song off the soundtrack to the first film, which is actually more appropriate to Catching Fire, if you ask me. (PS – nobody did)

Today’s Song of the Day is “The Ruler and the Killer” by Kid Cudi. Enjoy!

SONG OF THE DAY: "Still Not Ginger" – Chameleon Circuit

Song: “Still Not Ginger”

Performed by: Chameleon Circuit

Album: Still Got Legs (2011)

This weekend was a big one if you’re a Whovian. Saturday marked the 50th Anniversary of Doctor Who, and the BBC (and fans!) marked it in several ways, which I’ll talk about in a later post.

But, because I’ve still got Doctor Who on the brain, today’s Song of the Day is related, too. Here’s “Still Not Ginger” by Chameleon Circuit in honor of the current Doctor. Enjoy! Then, go eat some fish fingers and custard. 🙂

SONG OF THE DAY: "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" – Smashing Pumpkins

Song: “Bullet With Butterfly Wings”

Performed by: Smashing Pumpkins

Album: Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (1995)

Because it’s “Throwback Thursday” and nothing says “throwback” like music you listened to when you were in high school.

Also, I’ve been having the feeling lately that just when things are starting to go well (and there have been some good things happening lately), a whole bunch of crap happens to knock you back down again, and it’s sometimes difficult to feel like the strides you’re making are actually making any difference at all.

Despite all my rage, I’m still just a rat in a cage, indeed. 🙂

Anyway, today’s Song Of the Day is “Bullet With Butterfly Wings” by Smashing Pumpkins. Enjoy!

I’m in a very Latina mood today. 🙂 So here’s one of my favorite Spanish-language songs of the ever-ever.

Today’s Song of the Day is “Mi Tierra” by Gloria Estefan, from her album of the same name. Enjoy!

SONG OF THE DAY: "Slide" – Dido

Song: “Slide”

Performed by: Dido

Album: No Angel (1999)

It is the best of times, it is the worst of times. Dickens knew what was up. Last week, I did an amazing job of structuring my week now that I’m working mostly from home to get both day job stuff and writing stuff done, and I even made time during the day for “me time” – time to read, time to meditate. And then…I fell behind. Sunday and yesterday were all over the place, and the calming equilibrium I found seemed to have been frittered away and replaced with my usual panicked inertia. I was a deer in headlights again.

I have to remind myself that I’m not going to get it right every single day, but that 1) it’s OK, and 2) that’s no reason to give up entirely. Today is the one day a week where I have to leave my apartment for a day job, so I’m going to do that, after which, I’ll get back on the productivity horse tomorrow and get back to the structured day I’ve created for myself that I’ve realized that I really, really need in order to be at my best.

And because sometimes we all need a comforting talking-to, today’s Song of the Day is “Slide” by Dido from her debut album, No Angel. Enjoy! And don’t be so hard on yourselves today. 🙂

SONG OF THE DAY: "Roar" – Katy Perry

Song: “Roar”

Performed by: Katy Perry

Album: Prism (2013)

OK, I’ve been obsessed with this song for the past several weeks, so it’s about time it were my Song of the Day! It’s as anthemy as anthems get, and it’s awesome.

Before giving you the official video, though, allow me to share these really respectable covers as performed by Postmodern Jukebox, and as performed by the cast of Glee. 🙂

And now that you’ve listened to/watched those, here’s the main event. Today’s Song of the Day is Katy Perry singing “Roar.” Normally, I try to only post official videos if they actually contain the song performed all the way through (without speaking parts or other narrative interruptions), opting for lyric videos the rest of the time so you can just press play and listen to the song – but this video’s really great, and fun, and there’s minimal song interruption. 🙂 Enjoy!

SONG OF THE DAY: "Hard Out Here" – Lily Allen

Song: “Hard Out Here”

Performed by: Lily Allen

Album: From her upcoming 3rd Album of which I don’t know the title (2013)

I love me some Lily Allen, and I’ve missed her, and I’m so glad she’s back. 🙂

There’s already been a lot written about this video, and it only came out yesterday. There are those who adore it, and there are those who hate it. There are those who love the song but hate the video.

I’m still trying to figure out what camp I’m in. I definitely love the song on its own – it’s the video I’m trying to navigate right now.

While I figure that out (and possibly write something about it to be posted later), why don’t you have a looksee and tell me what you think in the comments below?

Today’s Song of the Day is Lily Allen’s “Hard Out Here.” Enjoy!

SONG OF THE DAY: "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)" – Rupert Holmes

Song: “Escape (The Pina Colada Song)”

Performed by: Rupert Holmes

Album: Partners in Crime (1979)

This morning, I was finishing up a guest post for someone else’s blog (I’ll link to it here as soon as it’s up) about writing, and realized the extent to which writing has been an escape for me.

And then I couldn’t get this song out of my head. 🙂

Today’s Song of the Day is “Escape (The Pina Colada Song)” by Rupert Holmes, which was released several months after I was born. God, I’m old. 😉 Anyway, enjoy!
